Craig Watson will not captain the upcoming Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team because of a family health matter, it was announced Wednesday.

In Watson’s place will be Andrew Ingram, who has served as the chairman of the GB&I selection committee since 2014. Ingram captained the victorious European Junior Ryder Cup in 2004 and ’06.

The biennial match is scheduled for Sept. 9-10 at Los Angeles Country Club. Two years ago at Royal Lytham, Team GB&I routed the U.S., 16 1/2 to 9 1/2.

The R&A did not discuss specifics in the release, saying only that Watson, the 1997 British Amateur champion, was stepping down because of a “serious illness in his immediate family.”
