NORTON, Mass. – Harold Varner III had plenty to smile about on Monday at TPC Boston after seven birdies through 10 holes and with his ultimate goal in sight.
Varner, vying to become the first player in the playoff era to advance from outside the bubble in three consecutive events, moved to within a stroke of cracking the top 70 on the playoff points list and qualifying for the BMW Championship before running out of steam on his closing nine.
“I looked up and saw I was 7 under and tied for twenty-something and I knew I had to be in the top 20 [to crack the top 70]. I just didn’t do a good job finishing,” said Varner, who finished with a 67 and was projected to finish 90th in points. “It was fun being there. I would do it all over again, I mean I’d do it a little differently.”

Varner jumped from 138th in points to No. 123 with his tie for 10th at the Wyndham Championship to qualify for the playoffs, and he moved up 32 spots with his tie for 20th at the postseason opener.
Still, the always-effusive Varner wasn’t lamenting any missed opportunities.
“One day I’m not going to be able to do what I’m doing right now. I could be doing what my dad is doing. He’s been selling cars for 40 years. I’d rather play golf for 40 years,” he smiled. “Yeah, I’m going to have fun. It’s golf. I was having fun the other day when I was 6 over through 18.”
