Five players who call Houston home are competing at the Symetra Tour’s Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge in South Dakota this week, which has inspired a unique fundraiser there.
Symetra Tour pros don’t play for the kind of purses the PGA Tour or even the LPGA play for, but it hasn’t stopped Houston’s Shannon Fish from devoting her play this week to her hometown. She announced Monday that she will donate $100 for every birdie she makes this week, and $500 for every eagle, to Team Rubicon, a group of military veterans organized as first responders to disasters. The Symetra Tour and the tournament committee will match Fish’s donation.
A day after Fish’s announcement, GreatLIFE Challenge upped the ante, starting a drive to uniquely turn player success into help for Houston. The GreatLIFE Cares Foundation is challenging fans to sign up to back a player for the week, to pledge to donate a dollar amount of the fan’s choice for every par, birdie or eagle their player makes. GreatLIFE Cares will match every pledge up to $50,000. One-time donations also will be matched. Here’s a link to the relief effort.
Houston natives Raegan Bremer, Jayde Panos, Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Portland Rosen are also playing in the event.
“I’m proud of Texans and Houstonians coming together in such a time of devastation to help their neighbors in need,” Fish told Symetra Tour media. “We will rebuild and recover stronger than ever. My prayers this week and going forward will be with my hometown, its residents, first responders, volunteers and folks coming from all around, for their strength and safety.”
