AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jordan Spieth could write a book.
Well, he might write a book if all the tinkering and searching he’s put in over the last few months on his putting pays off, but that tome had a solid first chapter on Thursday at the Masters.
After starting his day slowly, Spieth stormed into the lead thanks to five consecutive birdies that began at No. 13. For the ninth time in 17 career rounds at the Masters he finds himself with at least a share of the lead.
If he continues on this trajectory and claims his second green jacket it may well be a late session on the putting green on Wednesday with swing coach Cameron McCormick that provided the spark.

“I’ve kind of found a little trigger in the stroke that has served as beneficial that I tried out last week, and I really think what I did on the weekend last week was hugely beneficial to being able to start strong here,” said Spieth, who tied for third at the Houston Open.
On Thursday, Spieth was fourth in the field in strokes gained: putting (3.699) and was a perfect 10-for-10 from 5 feet and in. That’s a long way from where he was just a few weeks ago when he ranked 172nd on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting.
How he was able to turn things around so quickly, however, will remain classified for now.
“A lot of secrets that maybe if it propels to anything special, I’ll write about someday,” he laughed. “But there was a lot of work that went in mentally, physically.”
