JERSEY CITY, N.J. – It’s becoming one of the most dependable pairings for the American squad, and it will again be on full display Thursday at the Presidents Cup.
Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed will reprise their role as Team America, clad in red, white and blue and out to put another emotional point on the board. In their path at Liberty National Golf Club will be rookies Si Woo Kim and Emiliano Grillo, a matchup that makes the Americans decided favorites.
This is the fourth straight match-play event in which Spieth and Reed have been paired. The two have combined for a record of 5-1-2 when playing together, including a fourball win over Jason Day and Charl Schwartzel two years ago in South Korea. It’s a partnership that has paid big dividends for previous American captains, and it’s one that certainly won’t lack any confidence on the first tee.

“Really it’s just one of those things that him and I are really comfortable playing with each other,” Reed said. “We know how to help each other out, pick people up and also pull them back if they’re getting too excited. It’s just kind of one of those things that has always clicked for us.”
Spieth indicated that he and Reed may be split up at some point this week, given that he played two matches with Dustin Johnson in Korea while Reed was paired with both Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler. But in search of a strong start out of the gates, he was excited that captain Steve Stricker once again put him next to a familiar face in an intense environment.
“We try to beat each other and we try to play better than each other that day,” Spieth said. “It’s like a weird way that helps our team out, because we don’t like the other one getting more credit than the other. It’s kind of a weird pride thing for us, but it’s been successful.”
