WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Michelle Wie was raring to go.

She sat out the morning foursomes Friday at the Solheim Cup but was paired with good friend Danielle Kang in afternoon fourballs with the U.S. trailing by a point.

Wie couldn’t wait. Kang had won her match, and both were champing at the bit to lead the red, white and blue in the first match of the session.

Kang was on fire. She made everything she looked at. Wie played well, too, and made four birdies.

But something was off and Wie never realized it; not until well after she and Kang had dispatched Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Madelene Sagstrom, 3 and 1.

Wie was wearing the wrong uniform. She was wearing the uniform designated for the morning matches, not the one the rest of the team was wearing for the afternoon.

“I went all day not knowing or noticing,” Wie said. “I was blissfully oblivious I was wearing the wrong outfit.

“Yeah, I’m wearing the wrong outfit, and this is not my first Solheim, and the rookie (Kang) is wearing the right outfit.”

Said Kang: “I thought you wear the morning outfit if you haven’t played in the morning. OK, I realized, ‘No, she’s just in the wrong outfit.’ I’m not going to mention that in the middle of the round.”

Captain Juli Inkster had only one comment.

“Does it surprise you,” she asked. “It didn’t surprise me either.”
