As frustrating as his double bogey-bogey finish must have been Saturday, Justin Rose can take solace in the fact that he knows how to come from behind in Shanghai.
The defending champion will enter Sunday just three shots off the lead held by Tony Finau. That’s five shots closer than last year, when he stunned Dustin Johnson from eight back to win the WGC-HSBC Champions.
Rose was two clear of the field with only 17 and 18 to play, but a five-shot swing over the final two holes left him looking up at Finau, tied with Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele at minus-10.

“Yeah, I’m playing well, so I’ve got to go out tomorrow, shoot maybe something in the mid 60s and see if I can chase Tony down,” Rose said. “Obviously there’s three guys at 10-under who are all going to be chasing pretty hard but nothing to lose tomorrow. It’s going to take a good round. …
“Just got to put that last couple holes behind me and come out a little bit angry tomorrow.”
If Dr. Banner can get angry enough to win, he will return to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking with a successful title defense.
