Jon Rahm and Henrik Stenson share the 36-hole lead at the Hero World Challenge, where a pack well-known names will fight for world ranking points and one last 2018 payday over the weekend at Albany. Here’s what you need to know from Round 2 at the Tiger Invitational:
Leaderboard: Rahm (-10), Stenson (-10), Dustin Johnson (-9), Patrick Cantlay (-9), Tony Finau (-8)
What it means: The small Hero field is certainly heavy on star power. Rahm is in search of his first worldwide win since April, Stenson is making his way back from an elbow procedure with a new caddie on the bag, and Johnson is looking to cap off a somehow disappointing three-win 2018, as Cantlay and Finau try to follow-up on their lone PGA Tour wins to date with an unofficial victory in the Bahamas.
Round of the day: Rahm birdied half his holes in a bogey-free round of 9-under 63, the best of the day by a shot.
Best of the rest: After an even-par Thursday, Finau raced up the board with three birdies on each side and an eagle at the par-5 ninth for a bogey-free 64.
Biggest disappointment: Overnight co-leader Patrick Reed now finds himself just one shot out of last place following a 5-over 77. The Masters champion opened with bogeys at Nos. 1 and 2 and added a double at the seventh to go out in 4-over 40. He rattled off 9 straight pars from Nos. 8-16 but dropped one last shot at 17 on his way into the house.
Shot of the day: It wasn’t the best shot of the day, but it was the most talked about. Tiger Woods’ drive at the 18th hole found a bush, and Woods’ attempt to extricate his ball from said bush prompted a long post-round review as slow-motion replay showed Woods raking the ball and/or making contact with it multiple times in a single swing.
Ultimately, Woods admitted that he hit the ball twice, but he was not charged with any penalty since the rules violation was not discernable to the naked eye without the aid of high-definition, slow-motion replay, as covered under Decision 34-3/10, which concerns “limitations on the use of video evidence.”
Quote of the day: “I didn’t feel like I violated any rules.” – Woods, who signed for 69 and sits 2 under for the week
