SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France – For just the second time in his Ryder Cup career Tiger Woods sat out a match, taking to the sidelines after he and Patrick Reed lost their morning four-ball match and leading some to question if his health was an issue.
Although Woods took to the course for the afternoon session to cheer on his teammates, speculation grew that his back, which has been operated on four times, prompted the move. It was a notion U.S. captain Jim Furyk quickly dismissed.
“I have not heard that he’s had a back problem, I would say that that’s not true. You’d have to ask Tiger, but no, I saw him out on the golf course,” Furyk said. “He said he was all good.”
Woods will be in the American lineup on Saturday morning with Reed and the duo will again face Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood who won Friday’s four-ball match, 3 and 1.

Woods is fresh off his busiest stretch of the season that includes five events, including this week’s Ryder Cup, in six weeks and featured his first victory in five years at the Tour Championship.
“It’s been a lot of golf. I think winning last week was very exciting, also probably takes a little bit out of you,” Furyk said. “I felt like I had those groups out on the golf course that were playing extremely well. Kept them on the golf course and tried to get some guys in this afternoon that I also thought were playing really well.”
