ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Playing with a lead isn’t the only thing that’s new for Charles Howell III this week at the RSM Classic.
The veteran showed up for the year’s final official PGA Tour event sporting a bag that includes 13 new clubs and a new golf ball. Through 36 holes it’s been a successful transition with Howell opening with consecutive rounds of 64 for a three-stroke lead.
Howell had been a member of the PXG golf staff but appears bound for a transition this season. He’s playing 13 Titleist clubs (only the putter is not a Titleist product) and the company’s new version of the Pro V1 golf ball. He also wore the company’s hat for Rounds 1 and 2.
For the week Howell ranks fourth in fairways hit, first in greens in regulation and 15th in driving distance. He also went 14-for-14 in fairways hit and 18-for-18 in greens in regulation on Thursday on the Plantation Course.
