HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Dustin Johnson, who was born in Columbia, S.C., and went to college at Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, returns to the state’s only PGA Tour event this week with mixed emotions.
Coming back to the Heritage, which is sponsored by RBC, which also sponsors Johnson, is nostalgic, but in his two career starts at Harbour Town (2008 and ’09) he’s missed the cut.
As one of the game’s preeminent bomber’s of the golf ball, some say Harbour Town is not a great fit for his game, although he dismisses that idea.

“I mean it’s a different golf course than we play, [but] it’s just like any other golf course,” he explained. “There’s a spot you’re supposed to hit it to and you go from there.”
Predictably, Johnson will be restrained off the tee, hitting driver about four or five times a round on the 7,099-yard layout.
“I don’t hit many drivers,” Johnson said. “I get to hit a few around here. No matter what club you’re hitting, you need to hit it straight and place it in the correct side of the fairway.”
