AUGUSTA, Ga. – Annika Sorenstam said the news Wednesday that Augusta National has created a women’s amateur event is “fantastic” for the future of the game.

“As a little girl, knowing you have a chance to play on the greatest stage, it would’ve sent me to the range,” she said. “It’s heaven on earth, there’s no doubt about it. Now you get these young girls who will have their dreams come true.”

Masters chairman Fred Ridley announced Wednesday that beginning in 2019, the club will host a 54-hole women’s amateur event that culminates with the final round at Augusta National.

Sorenstam is a longtime supporter of women’s golf at the junior and college level, hosting tournaments each year through her Annika Foundation. Because girls’ golf is the fastest-growing segment in the sport, she said the “timing is right” for an event such as the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.

“You have to look at the big picture,” she said. “This is fantastic for women’s golf. … It’s a carrot for these young girls.”
