Fans coming out to watch this week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic will have plenty of homegrown talent to root for.
Mexico’s only PGA Tour event boasts a 132-man field, including a record four Mexican players who arrive at Playa del Carmen as fully-exempt PGA Tour members. Headlining that contingent is Abraham Ancer, who at No. 98 is the highest-ranked Mexican in the world.
Ancer couldn’t hold on to the 54-hole lead at TPC Boston in September, but he’s continued to play well since. A T-5 finish last month in Malaysia was followed by a T-4 finish last week in Las Vegas, where he shot three rounds of 66.
“Probably the past six months I’ve been playing some good golf and been really, really comfortable in tournaments,” Ancer told reporters. “I just feel like I obviously belong, and have obviously a chance to win every week. Just need to keep putting myself in that situation and I’ve been able to do that lately.”
Other Mexicans in the field this week who are exempt this season on Tour include Roberto Diaz, Carlos Ortiz and Jose de Jesus Rodriguez. All four men are among the seven Mexicans who have made the cut in the 11-year history of the event, with Ortiz notching a T-9 finish in 2014.
